Hi Redbud Families,
It’s the return of the monkeys! For today’s teacher message, 5 of my little puppet friends help me read Five Little Monkeys Reading in Bed.
Today’s suggested activity, inspired by the five little monkeys, is to incorporate emotional literacy into storytime with your Redbud. Emotional literacy is “the ability to identify, understand, and respond to emotions in oneself and others in a healthy manner,” and learning to name our feelings is one of the first steps. There are many opportunities to teach this, and you’re probably already doing it! A couple of ideas specific to reading with your little ones:
- Ask how your child feels about something that happens in the story. You might want to suggest some possibilities and/or share your own feelings. (“The dog dad found his missing puppy! How does that make you feel? I feel happy.”)
- Point out different characters’ faces and see if your Redbud can guess how they’re feeling. (This monkey is crying. How do you think they’re feeling?”)
One more reminder: if you would like to join a Redbud teacher for a short one-on-one Zoom video call with your little one, or would like to have a parent-teacher Zoom meeting to discuss possible strategies to support your little one during this time, please send an email to this email address with the following information:
1. Are you requesting a child-teacher or parent-teacher meeting (or both)?
2. When are you available? Please give a block of time, like M,W 9:30 – 11:00 am
If you are requesting a child AND a parent meeting please clearly designate times for each.
We’re looking forward to seeing some of your faces soon!
Take care everyone,
Seth
